Understanding the verification verdict
What verifying a certificate establishes, and what it leaves to your judgement.
Do I need an account to verify a certificate?
No. Verification is public and free, with no sign-up. Any recipient of a sealed document can check the accompanying certificate.
Do I have to upload the document itself?
No. Only the certificate is checked. The document never leaves your machine, and PMI receives no copy of it.
What exactly does a “valid” verdict mean?
It confirms two things: the certificate was indeed issued by ProtectMyId, and none of its contents have been altered since. It does not state that the identity document itself is genuine, nor that the person presenting it is its rightful holder.
Is a certificate still verifiable years later?
Yes. Validity rests on the signature, not on a record held by PMI. A certificate therefore remains verifiable even if the associated data has been deleted at its holder's request.
Can I verify a certificate without using your site?
Yes. ProtectMyId's public keys are published, allowing a signature to be checked offline with your own tooling. The verification page is a convenience, not a mandatory step.
Does verification tell me whether the document was reported stolen?
No. This page checks a certificate's authenticity, nothing more. Querying the register of declared documents is reserved for organizations with a professional account.
